A Scented World, the Magic of Fragrances – Claire Bingham

Design journalist Claire Bingham (Elle Decoration,Vogue Living, Architectural Digest) presents a nosedive into the world of perfume, through people (perfumers, founders etc), places (boutiques, hotels, laboratories, institutes etc) and the iconic creations that embody contemporary perfumery.

From Barnabé Fillon to Lyn Harris, from Jean-Claude Ellena to Filippo Sorcinelli, from Osmothèque to Fragonard, from IFF-LMR to Naomi Goodsir, this luxurious coffee table book in three languages (English, French and German) brings to get her interviews, various portraits, flacons and mises en scène to create a cosmopolitan, aesthetic and modern take on perfume through the eyes of those who produce it. While some of the selections may seem unusual, they illustrate the diversity and richness of the industry today.

With a preface by Thierry Wasser acclaiming the author’s “provocative” teaching method and emotional synaesthesia, Ron Winnegrad, the perfumer and, most recently, head of the IFF Perfumery School, presents an intimate and heart-warming autobiographical account of his personal outlook on the fragrance industry and the craft behind it. Beginning with a brief history of his career and early days as a technical perfumer developing new aroma chemicals, most of the text discusses the ‘FragranceGPS’ process Winnegrad developed for learning raw materials, which is succinct and useful for any perfumery student. It is in the realms outside of perfumery that the book occasionally loses focus as Winnegrad attempts to align his Eastern philosophy with Western perfumery traditions, although occasionally producing interesting results.

Whether we know it or not, the perfume we wear affects the way people perceive us. What’s more, it helps shape our own vision of ourselves: it can make us feel happy, boost our self-confidence or even let us take on a different persona. So argues Sarah Colton, an American perfume journalist based in Paris, who encourages us to take advantage of the fascinating powers of fragrances and to use them strategically, picking them according to what we want to achieve – a few drops of the rosy bouquet of Paris to embody innocence, a spritz of Féminité du bois if you mean trouble, a splash of Envy to commit a dirty job of revenge… Although its concept may seem a little far-fetched at first, this concise book turns out to be an inspiring practical guide to contemporary fragrances (featuring more than 400 references) and uses plenty of historical anecdotes to show how “Bad Girls” from Eve to Madonna have used the power of perfume to reach their goals
