Its principle: to create a link between the perfume industry and the programs run by UNFPA in the territories that produce raw materials. The first testing ground for this mobilization is the Comoros, where UNFPA already operates a network of mobile clinics providing access to essential health services for women, girls and young people. Fragrance for Impact intends to mobilize players in the perfume industry to contribute to the development of this system, with the goal, notably, of growing the network from four to seven clinics.

The day after the launch dinner held in Paris, Nez spoke with Haweya Mohamed and Ammin Youssouf, co-founders of The Colors, about the origins of this bridge between perfumery and on-the-ground action, and more broadly about the industry’s responsibility toward the territories from which it draws some of its raw materials.

Last night, you officially launched Fragrance for Impact in front of perfume industry figures. What will you take away from this first evening?

Haweya Mohamed and Ammin Youssouf: What we take away above all is the quality of the exchanges and the very positive energy that accompanied this launch. We brought together fragrance houses, brands, retailers, content creators and representatives of the specialized press. Above all, we felt a shared desire to work collectively so that the sector can better support the communities upstream in its value chain. This mobilization is particularly important given the complex funding environment that international institutions like UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, are currently facing. We feel that the perfume industry wants to answer its call. It was also essential that Fragrance for Impact not remain confined to the industry alone. Figures from film, sport, the general press and social and solidarity economy actors joined the discussions. This diversity opens the way to new collaborations between the perfume industry and other worlds.

How did the idea for Fragrance for Impact come about? At what point did you identify that there could be a connection between the work already carried out by UNFPA in the Comoros and the perfume industry?

H.M. and A.Y.: The idea was born from the meeting of two worlds present in the same territories. On one side, the perfume industry relies on natural ingredient supply chains. On the other, UNFPA deploys comprehensive health programs among these communities. The complementarity seemed obvious to us: UNFPA brings its expertise and capacity for action on the ground, while the perfume industry can open up new sources of funding to amplify these programs. Fragrance for Impact combines this operational expertise, The Colors’ ability to bring together an ecosystem, and the industry’s willingness to get involved.

Why did this connection seem particularly relevant to you in the Comoros?

H.M. and A.Y.: The Comoros hold a historic place in the global perfume value chain, notably thanks to ylang-ylang and vanilla. We also know the Comorian terrain and the communities in these supply chains very well. There was therefore a natural proximity between the territory, the perfume industry and the actions carried out locally by UNFPA.

So your approach is not to create a new program on the ground, but to mobilize an industry around a system that already exists. Why this choice?

H.M. and A.Y.: We did not want to create an additional system or start from scratch. UNFPA’s mobile clinic program is already operational, integrated into the Comorian health system, and produces concrete results. Our role is to mobilize the perfume industry to accelerate a solution that already works. This collaboration therefore had an almost “plug and play” quality to it. It allows the industry to contribute to a program led by an institution that has the necessary expertise, teams and monitoring mechanisms. The funds mobilized can thus be converted into action on the ground more quickly.

What does Fragrance for Impact concretely bring then? Is it primarily funding, visibility, the industry’s mobilization capacity, or all of these at once?

H.M. and A.Y.: The primary value of Fragrance for Impact lies in its mobilization capacity. The movement allows everyone to contribute to UNFPA’s health missions with what they do best. UNFPA brings its field expertise. Companies can mobilize funding and skills. Brands can imagine solidarity fragrance editions or other collaborations. Content creators and media can amplify the movement’s visibility, while retailers can showcase participating brands and their initiatives to the public. Fragrance for Impact organizes the complementarity of these contributions in order to create more impact and efficiency than a series of isolated actions would.

Why should the perfume industry, in your view, feel particularly concerned by the health of the populations in these territories?

H.M. and A.Y.: Because these populations are not external to the industry. They are at the very heart of its value chain. They cultivate and harvest some of the raw materials that feed olfactory creation, while preserving the know-how and ecosystems essential to the quality and sustainability of these supply chains. It is a question of responsibility and reciprocity, but also of a sustainable vision for the industry. A supply chain can only be truly resilient if the communities it depends on are resilient too. This is not about asking companies to substitute for public authorities or international institutions, but about allowing them to contribute, through UNFPA’s expertise, to concrete solutions in territories with which their activity already has a deep connection.

DB: How do you avoid this mobilization becoming, for participating companies, merely a communications operation? What commitments and what results will you be able to ask for and measure?

H.M. and A.Y.: Communication can raise awareness, broaden mobilization and attract new partners. However, it cannot constitute the commitment on its own. The visibility granted to a company must therefore correspond to a real, measurable contribution: funding, contribution of skills, a solidarity fragrance edition, promotion by a retailer, or an amplification campaign. We will track the means mobilized, such as amounts raised, partnerships concluded and skills contributed, as well as the results achieved on the ground: missions carried out, people received, consultations conducted and health services delivered. UNFPA’s expertise in monitoring and reporting is decisive. The organization holds itself to a very high standard of transparency, funding traceability and results measurement. Each partner will thus be able to understand precisely how their contribution is being used and what actions it corresponds to.

The Comoros are presented as a first testing ground. Is Fragrance for Impact meant to become a model for connecting the perfume industry to other UNFPA programs in other producing regions?

H.M. and A.Y.: Yes, that is exactly our ambition, but The Colors is not meant to manage all future rollouts. Our role is to test the model in the Comoros, measure its results, and then develop a method and best practices that allow other actors to take over. Madagascar, for example, represents an obvious next step given its geographic proximity to the Comoros, but also the links between the two countries around supply chains such as vanilla and ylang-ylang. We plan to share the experience gained at the UN General Assembly in September 2027. Other UNFPA offices, local actors and industry partners will then be able to adapt the model to the realities of their own territories.

This ability to build bridges between worlds that don’t know each other well seems quite characteristic of The Colors. Is that ultimately your role in Fragrance for Impact?

H.M. and A.Y.: Yes, The Colors aims to connect actors, territories and cultures that have a lot to offer each other, but that don’t always have the spaces or the codes needed to work together. In Fragrance for Impact, we play a role of interface and translation. UNFPA retains oversight and monitoring of the health missions on the ground. The Colors creates the conditions that allow the industry to engage as closely as possible with local realities, in a relevant and sustainable way.

The Colors and Nez have already worked together during Paris Perfume Week 2026, notably to give a place to new scenes and geographies in perfumery. Do you see Fragrance for Impact as another facet of that same approach?

H.M. and A.Y.: Absolutely. During Paris Perfume Week, our collaboration was already aimed at broadening the narrative of perfumery by giving more space to new scenes, new geographies and new voices. This continuation seems all the more natural to us given that Nez has long given significant space to natural ingredients, but also to territories, know-how and the people who sustain them. The NEZ+LMR Cahiers des naturels collection, developed with IFF, as well as your content on Madagascar or on the work carried out by Amouage around the frankincense supply chain at Wadi Dawkah, are very good examples of this. Fragrance for Impact draws inspiration from the dynamic behind the Nez media brand, the olfactory cultural movement. We now look forward to building with you a genuine “Impact” branch, capable of extending this cultural work through strong commitments on the ground.

👉🏾 More information to join the movement at: https://www.thecolo.rs/fragrance-for-impact

The Colors and the United Nations Population Fund launched Fragrance for Impact.
